ELLIOTT ERWITT | 100+1

Elliott Erwitt (b. 26 July 1928 Paris, France) is a documentary photographer known for his black and white candid shots of ironic and absurd situations within everyday settings— a master of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s “decisive moment”. Erwitt spent his childhood in Milan, then emigrated with his family of Russian origin to the US, via France, in 1939 at the age of ten. Erwitt studied photography and filmmaking at Los Angeles City College and the New School for Social Research, finishing his education in 1950. After a year in the army, he began to work as a freelance photographer and in 1953 he became a member of the legendary photojournalist cooperative Magnum Photos.

In a career spanning close to 65 years, Elliott Erwitt has produced celebrity portraits and photo reportages from Europe, the United States, Japan and Cuba. In the late 1960s Erwitt served as Magnum Photos’ president for three years. He then turned to film: in the 1970s he produced several noted documentaries and in the 1980s eighteen comedy films for Home Box Office. Erwitt became known for his benevolent irony, and for a humanistic sensibility traditional to the spirit of Magnum Photos.

The current exhibition on offer is a revised version of the 1997 Verona, Italy exhibit that was also presented at Fotografiska, Stockholm in 2013.

“There is really nothing mysterious about photography. It’s about observing. Often it’s a matter of luck and circumstance. Hopefully I haven’t taken my best picture yet.”

– ELLIOTT ERWITT
