MARIAN DREW | Antipodes

This mid-career survey of renowned Australian photo-media artist Marian Drew explores 30 years of her practice. From her seminal works of the mid-1980’s through to her still live studies at the beginning of the millennium. This is the first exhibition offered in America and Europe to showcase the complete scope of her achievements.

Marian Drew (born 1960) emerged in the artistic scene at a time in which photographic recognition was focused on the masculine edge of document-based material. She engaged this conceptual and almost scientific approach, and altered it through an emotive and experimental method; subverting the medium and its link to representation through the adaptive act of play.

Her gestural use of the technique known as ‘painting with light’ allowed her to explore human relations, the environment and the social and historical constructs that shape us in a constructed tableaux of photographic uncertainties.

As an Australian, her concerns for the environment and its traditional significance to culture have served as a platform to explore post-colonial issues, our relation to land, its use and the repercussion to our psyche. She ultimately links us to flora and fauna in an inescapable embrace of the past, the present and the inevitability of the future.

“Drew’s heightened colour, theatrical compositions and layered imagery signal that her work is indeed worked, displacing any lingering misconceptions that photography involves mere reflection”.
